Supporting Immune Health For Fall/Winter

One of the most common questions I get this time of year is, "What should I take to support my immune system?".  For one, you might consider having your vitamin D level tested, which you can ask your Doctor for, or you can order yourself through places like  One particularly interesting and recent study showed vitamin D's ability to help prevent influenza virus (in this case in school children at a dosage of 1200iu per day).  This was a randomized, double blind study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.  Secondly, an excellent product called V-Clear has been the subject of over 20 clinical trials, and it has been shown to shorten the duration and reduce symptoms of the common cold (sore throat, nasal congestion, bronchial irritations).  Lastly, I am a huge fan of Beta Glucan, which can be used preventively, and has been shown to support both innate and antibody immunity, as well as increase the quantity and quality of white blood cells.  There is huge variability in quality and efficacy of Beta Glucan products, so look for a product that has the patented Glucan 300 (the most common brand is Transfer Point).  Some of the best research on Beta Glucan can be found at (Dr. Vetvicka, an immunologist/pathologist at the University of Kentucky).  General recommendations for supporting immune health also include getting enough sleep, practicing stress reduction, and avoiding processed foods.
