New research shows that treating fever in someone with influenza virus can help the virus spread. This seems self evident, given that generating a fever is one of the body's main mechanisms for reducing viral activity. The authors of the recent study estimate that treating fever with medications such as ibuprofen may lead to tens of thousands more influenza cases per year. This research will likely lead to policy changes in terms of physician recommendations, but that remains to be seen.
