The Immune System and Mental Health

I've blogged in the past about the correlation between immune function and mental health, and specifically mentioned a book called "Brain On Fire" which describes a journalist's decent into mental illness and subsequent cure after treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs.  More and more research is basically showing that inflammation in the body, which is initiated by the immune system (with molecules called pro-inflammatory cytokines), affects the brain.  What initiates the inflammation should be the next area of focus, and that can be many things, such as infection, environmental toxins, and even foods (to which a person is allergic or sensitive).  What is exciting is that going down this "rabbit hole" is getting us closer to the actual cause.  Consider reading this excellent article on the subject of the immune system and mental health in USA Today.
