Lyme Disease and White Footed Mice

The CDC is estimating that there are about 300,000 cases of Lyme Disease in the US each year (only about 30,000 are reported), and the amount of people diagnosed with it is increasing every year.  Researchers are starting to look at the possibility that an increase in the white footed mouse population (due to a drop in the red fox population) might be a reason, as these critters are definitely a carrier of Borrelia, the cause of Lyme.  Apparently a 2012 study showed just that, which was that the increase in Lyme correlated to a drop in the red fox population rather than an increase in the deer population.  To read an article in the Scientific American discussing this issue, click here.
